Make a wooden shelf for your sofa from scrap wood

Details in your home can create a pleasant atmosphere and enhance comfort. An example is a practical wooden shelf for the sofa, where you can put down your drink or bowl of snacks while watching your favorite film, reading a book or enjoying a chat with some friends. Why not use some scrap wooden boards to make a practical wooden shelf?

Apart from being convenient and very useful, it is easy to place on the armrest of your sectional sofa. The size of the shelf will depend on your habits and needs, but even a small shelf will provide enough space for a cup of coffee, glass of wine, snacks, a book, phone or remote control, and keep them at your fingertips.

To make a wooden shelf for the sofa from scrap wooden boards, you will need:

  • three scrap wooden boards,
  • an extra board (in case of cutting out a cupholder in the shelf),
  • a power drill and a bit with the required attachments,
  • saw,
  • screws,
  • wood glue,
  • sandpaper,
  • a wiping cloth for dirt,
  • the preferred hue of Belinka Interier wood stain.

How to make wooden shelf for the sofa from scrap wooden boards:

When picking out the wooden boards, make sure they are as flat as possible, because they will support various objects such as a book, cup of hot drink, snack or remote control. It is equally important to check the condition of the boards before making the shelf. They should be dry and free of any wood pests.

Next, decide the size of the shelf based on its purpose. Measure the width and depth of the armrest of your sectional sofa to define the size of your scrap wooden boards. The finished shelf will be U-shaped, so you need to get three wooden boards and cut them to size with a circular or jig saw. If needed, clean the surface of the boards with sandpaper, then remove the dust particles from the surface with a wiping cloth for dirt.

Next, apply wood glue to the edges of the wooden boards and join the boards together so that two boards are supporting the board on top (forming the shape of the letter U). Don’t move on to the next step until the glue has dried. If you’re concerned that the glue will not hold the boards together, you can screw them together. In that case think about the length of the screws, so that they will be flush with the wooden boards with no ends sticking out from the surface. These could damage the sofa, or, if protruding from the top surface, create bumps that could overturn a glass containing a drink.

Now that you have put together the shelf, it is time to paint it with Belinka Interier wood stain in your preferred hue. This will protect the wooden shelf for the sofa against various interior factors such as fats, cleaning agents, moisture and drops of liquid. In addition to nine standard hues with a silky sheen which emphasize the natural wood grain, you can choose from 76 colour tones on the Belinka MIX colour chart.

Don’t use the sofa shelf before the coat of wood stain on its surface is completely dry. The wood stain will dry in a few hours, but we recommend waiting for three days before you start using it; let the coating set for a bit longer to prevent any damage that could result from contact with the objects placed on the shelf.

If you are handy

And if you have some extra energy, you can cut a circle into the top of the shelf to serve as a cupholder. To make sure the cup sits nicely into the cut shape, carefully measure the cup diameter or place it on the shelf and draw its outline. Use a saw to cut out the marked shape. Glue a thin wooden or plywood board to the bottom side of the board with the hole. It will serve as a base that will stop the cup from sliding through the hole. Now follow the step of gluing the boards in a U-shape and the rest of the steps described above.

Once you have finished this simple yet convenient wooden accessory, all that’s left is to sit back and enjoy using your beautiful product.
