3 ideas for reusing wood slices

Wood radiates warmth and a feeling of domesticity, whether it’s decorating the inside or the outside of our homes. Ana and Eva, members of Belinka’s group of ambassadors, who create under the Wood & Blonde brand, have prepared advice for making three decorative pieces from wood slices. If you’re at least a little bit handy, roll up your sleeves and create your beautiful new decorations.

Bird feeder

To make a bird feeder from wood slices, you will need:

  • two oak rings of any diameter,
  • rope,
  • sandpaper for manual sanding or eccentric sander,
  • drill,
  • paintbrush or cloth for applying oil,
  • cloth for wiping off oil and
  • Belinka Oil Exterier.

Remove the bark from the two wooden rings with a hammer and chisel or knife. Sand all surfaces to the desired smoothness. If you prefer a natural look, leave the edges a little rougher. Use the drill to drill three holes in each slice.

Blow dust off the wood and use the paintbrush or cloth to apply Belinka Oil Exterier for outdoor use. After 15 minutes, wipe off any residual oil using a cotton cloth which should be soaked in water after use, as otherwise spontaneous combustion may occur.

Use rope to connect the slices and secure the desired height with knots. Decorate the bird feeder with ivy if desired and hang.

Wreath

To make a wreath from wood slices, you will need:

  • wooden discs made from a branch, also available in hobby shops,
  • sandpaper,
  • wood glue,
  • paintbrush or cloth for applying oil,
  • cloth for wiping off oil,
  • decorations (greenery, lavender, rope…) and
  • Belinka Oil Exterier.

Cut the branch into discs up to 1 cm thick using a circular saw and sand them well. Place them in a circle in two layers and glue them in place with wood glue. Weight them and allow the glue to dry. Blow off any impurities from the wood. Oil the wood using a paintbrush or cloth and wipe off any residual Belinka Oil Exterier after 15 minutes using a cotton cloth, which should be soaked in water after use, as otherwise spontaneous combustion may occur. Decorate the wooden wreath with any decoration you like: greenery, lavender or rope and jute. Place the wreath on a table or hang it on a door.

Sign

To make a sign from wood slices, you will need:

  • 1 cm thick wooden disc, cut diagonally from the branch to make an oval shape,
  • sandpaper,
  • paintbrush or cloth for applying oil,
  • cloth for wiping off oil,
  • drill,
  • wood burning tool,
  • string and
  • Belinka Oil Exterier.

How to make a sign from wood slices:

Cut the wooden disc from the branch diagonally using a circular saw to maximise the surface area (oval shape). Sand with 40-320 grit sandpaper, leaving the edge natural or treated if desired.

Use the drill to drill two holes for the string. Use the wood burning tool to engrave the desired lettering.

Oil the disc using a paintbrush or cloth and wipe off any residual Belinka Oil Exterier after 15 minutes using a cotton cloth, which should be soaked in water after use, as otherwise spontaneous combustion may occur. Thread a string through the holes and hang the wooden sign on a door or wall.

Easy, isn’t it?
